CMMS Diagram & Explanation

A diagram has been presented which introduces the correlations between computerized maintenance management systems, users, and environment. Just like any other system, analyzing a CMMS could be done in three parts; Inputs, Processes, Outputs. The main intention of drawing this diagram is to show the inputs and outputs of a CMMS so that it will be much easier to determine our expectations from a maintenance information system and also the usually unseen costs of running it which will be discussed in the next posts.

Inputs

Inputs are actually those data which are entered in the system everyday and once in the beginning of implementing the system. Data entry requires three kinds of resources; Human, Time, Computer Hardware. The costs of time and then human force are considerable.

Processes

These are the way the system works and produces the outputs. We don’t see them directly, but we can judge them through evaluation of outputs. Algorithms play an important role in effectiveness of processes. Those processes are known as good in CMMS which produce accurate, reliable, useful and customizable outputs (Reports, Statistics, History of equipment, etc.) quickly.

Outputs

Outputs are simply what we get from the system and has impacts on our decisions to make or not to make a change in the environment. In a CMMS, outputs are generally the reports, statistics, equipment’s history, a timely flow of information between the related departments, etc.

In the next posts, each part will be discussed separately.
